Guy Staley began business as Staley Communication in 1959 from his home in Cadiz, Ohio. In 1961 Staley Communication became a Motorola Service Station (MSS), an important factor in the growth of the company. Throughout the early years, the company experienced growth in the Eastern Ohio area and also expanded into the Wheeling area. In 1972 Staley opened a Wheeling service facility located in the Fulton area of the city. Due to acquisitions and continued business growth, a Steubenville, Ohio service facility was opened in 1978 followed in 1989 by an addition of a service facility in Zanesville, Ohio. In 1990 the Wheeling service facility along with the Cadiz business office relocated to a new building at 93 Main Street in Wheeling. The 93 Main Street location served as the Wheeling area service center and also the corporate business office until August 2005 when the Company moved to its newly renovated building at 2 – 22nd Street in Wheeling.
In 1996 Staley Communication moved into the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area by acquiring an existing Motorola Service Station. This acquisition into the Pittsburgh market and four others that followed over the next several years positioned Staley Communication as a leader in the two-way radio sales and service business in the Western Pennsylvania region. Staley Communication operates a facility in Greensburg PA and also in downtown Pittsburgh.
In November 2003 the growth continued in West Virginia when Motorola made Staley Communication a full line dealer in nine counties in central West Virginia. A Morgantown, WV service facility was opened in April 2004 to support the customers in this area. Also in November 2003, another business acquisition moved Staley Communication into the Youngstown-Warren, Ohio area. In November 2004, a service facility was opened to serve the Marietta, Ohio area. With this addition, Staley Communication currently operates 8 sales and service facilities with a total of 87 employees in the tri-state area; 29 employees work out of the Wheeling facility.
The family business of Staley Communication which started with Guy Staley and his wife Norma running the business from their home in Cadiz continues today on a much larger scale. Guy and Norma have retired and the day to day management of the company has passed to two of their children Mark and Paul who are active in the daily operations of the company.
PURCHASE AND RENOVATION OF
ZARNIT GROCERY BUILDING
As a result of the expansion of the business from 1996 through 2002, Mark Staley recognized that the company would soon outgrow the space available at both the Wheeling facility and also the Pittsburgh facility. After considering several options, he purchased property in the Pittsburgh area with the intention to build a new facility that would house the Pittsburgh area service center and the corporate business offices. These plans, however, would never come to be.
Mark met with officials from the City of Wheeling Development Office in early 2004. At that time, the City along with RED, (Regional Economic Development Partnership - OVIBDC at that time) were marketing a property in center Wheeling, the Zarnit Grocery building. Mark visited the building in February 2004 and was convinced it would work as a site for not only a Wheeling service center but also the corporate business office. The sale was completed in June 2004. In addition, Staley Communication purchased the Ohio Valley Window building at 2208 Water Street located just south of the Zarnit building. The building is currently used as an indoor vehicle service area.
The renovations at the Zarnit building began in the fall of 2004. After slowing down a bit during the winter months, workers at the building were in full force by the spring of 2005. Plans were put in place for an end of August moving date and on August 26th the boxes were packed and the moving truck pulled up to 93 Main. On Monday, August 29th, Staley Communication opened for business at its new location at 2 – 22nd Street.
The start of the renovations included gutting all the floors so that each floor with the exception of the structural support columns was just a wide open space. Walters Construction began work with a shell. Some of the early renovations included the replacement of one structural support column on the
first floor, repair and replacement of several roof beams, complete roof replacement, and replacement of two old wooden staircases. Replacing the elevator and moving it over resulted in the addition of a skylight and open area on the 2nd and 3rd floors. The brick on the exterior walls was left exposed throughout the building and the wooden support columns and roof beams were cleaned and also left exposed. A building security system with keycard access was also part of the project. As you look around the interior of the building most of what you see is new.
The newly renovated Staley Communication building has approximately 8000 sq ft on each of its three floors. The first floor is made up of a reception/lobby area, parts storage, shop area, shipping/receiving, warehouse manager’s office, and warehouse/inventory storage area. The second floor area contains the IT manager’s office along with the IT equipment room, sales offices, meeting room, customer support center, employee lunch area, and training room. The third floor is the location of the corporate business offices, file room storage, conference room and employee lunch area.
The Staley family and the employees of Staley Communication are extremely excited and proud to be part of the renovation of this beautiful building. With the involvement of many individuals, businesses, and city officials, this project is a wonderful example of everyone working together to keep a business in the city of Wheeling and to give new life to an old building.
